Size
On the back of the forklift is a counterbalance, that allows the forklift to raise extremely heavy objects. The counterbalance gives balance so that the machine will not tip over while lifting and transporting heavy cargo. Forklifts are rated according to their load capacity. A small forklift which can lift 1800 kilograms weighs around 4000 kilograms, which is equivalent to two full-size pickup trucks. The largest forklifts can have up to 36,000 kilograms of lifting capacity.

Considerations
In operating a lift truck, there are many safety concerns. For instance, travel in reverse when driving down a ramp. You must also haul a load in reverse if the load interferes with vision and is bulky. Operators should be familiar with how to safely mount the lift using the "three-point stance." This involves putting the right hand on the back of the seat, while holding the upright of the safety cage with the left hand and putting the left foot on the step.
